The Côte D’Azur in the south of France really does have it all. Beautiful beaches, glamorous resorts and some brilliant local cuisine. To top it all off, you can be in this slice of paradise from the UK within 2 hours. Centred around the cultural hubs of Nice, Monaco and Cannes, the Côte D’Azur stretches along the south coast of France and offers so much to see and do. We only had a week but will definitely be going back to explore further. But in the meantime, here are our top 5 things to do in the Côte D’Azur.
TOP 5 THINGS TO DO ON THE CÔTE D’AZUR
1. WALKING TOUR OF NICE
Nice is the capital of this region of France and steeped in culture as a port of historic importance. Today it is a bustling city that is the fifth largest in France. The old town is full of charm and we would highly recommend going on a free walking tour to explore this part of the city and to find out more about its history. Most tours take around two and a half hours and meet at Place Masséna.
2. TAKE THE TRAIN ALONG THE COAST
Commonly named as one of the best train journeys in the world, the trip from Monaco to Cannes does not disappoint. Slowly creeping along the coast, this journey is much more than just a way to get from A to B. The journey offers beautiful views across the Mediterranean which make a mockery of the minimal fare. It is well worth taking the train the next time you are back in this part of the world. In fact, the public transport is so good you might not need to hire a car at all.
3. SOAK UP THE ATMOSPHERE IN ANTIBES
The old town of Antibes is France at its finest. Narrow cobbled alleys, cafes sprawling into the streets, a warm and inviting ambiance unspoiled by rowdy tourists. We fell in love with Antibes during our four nights here and you will too. We were lucky enough to be here during the Fête de la Musique which was an incredible experience as numerous pop-up stages appeared throughout the town showcasing local musical talent. We joined the locals as they came out to celebrate and drink wine in the streets until the early hours of the morning.
4. SEE THE GLITZ AND GLAM OF MONACO
The casino, the hotel, the Grand Prix. Monaco is world famous as the home of the rich and the elite. Don’t base yourself here for your trip to the Côte D’Azur as there are better places to stay but it is still worth the day trip. Have a drink in the Café de Paris and soak up your glamorous surroundings. You might even spot a celebrity!
5. SPEND A DAY BY THE BEACH
The Côte d’Azur is known for its beaches. Although the beach in Nice is pebbly and perhaps not the most comfortable there are numerous sandy beaches for you to choose from. A number of these are privately owned but there is also a beautiful, small public beach in the old town of Antibes which is not to be missed. Just remember to pack the sun cream!
