Winter is no longer coming…it is finally with us! We will all soon be turned into White Walkers as summer continues to fade and the long night sets in. But Game of Thrones references aside, it doesn’t have to be that way. Getting away during winter and soaking up the sun whilst everyone back home is chained to their desk is a great idea. In this post we will tell you what the benefits of winter sun are and where you can find it this year.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF WINTER SUN?

Beach

There have been so many studies about the benefits of winter sun but we have chosen a couple of our favourites to show you how much a week by the pool can make a difference to you this winter.

1. TOPS UP YOUR VITAMIN D

Vitamin D is vitally important to our health and the sun provides up to 90% of our Vitamin D intake. Vitamin D gives you more energy, helps slow down the ageing process and will help protect you from disease. Result!

2. HELPS BEAT SAD

Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD affects 1 in 20 people in the UK while over 1 in 10 people will suffer from the winter blues. People suffering from SAD struggle significantly during the winter months. Now, SAD is a serious condition which won’t be solved by a holiday but research has shown that winter sun can help alleviate the symptoms.

3. REDUCES YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE

Yes, you read that correctly. Catching some rays will help reduce your blood pressure. Scientific research has shown that winter sun produces nitric oxide which loosens your blood vessels and therefore reduces your blood pressure.

4. GET YOUR SUMMER WARDROBE OUT AGAIN

Love your summer wardrobe but only get to wear it for two months of the year in the UK? Head off to tropical climes and you can crack out your favourite summer outfit in the height of winter. Winter travel also gives you another reason to hit the end of season sales earlier in the year.

WHERE CAN YOU FIND WINTER SUN?

Pool side

We hope that we have convinced you by now that you should be packing your bags and jetting off to your winter sun destination. But where to go and do you really have to fly to the other side of the world to find it?

1. CANCUN, MEXICO

Flight Time From UK: 10hr 50min

Average High Temperature in November: 29°C

Once hurricane season has passed, Cancun is one of the best places in the world for a winter sun holiday. With miles of beautiful sandy beaches and hundreds of luxury hotels to choose from such as the TUI Sensatori Riviera Cancun, this part of Mexico has everything you need to enjoy a fantastic holiday. There’s plenty of culture too with Chichen Itza only a short drive away.

2. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Flight Time From UK: 9hr 15min

Average High Temperature in November: 30°C

Who doesn’t want to spend winter in the Carribean? And with so many beautiful islands to pick from, how do you choose one? Well for your next holiday look no further than the Dominican Republic. We had a fantastic holiday at the TUI Sensatori Punta Cana and would highly recommend visiting this warm and welcoming island. Plus, it works out cheaper than some of the more popular islands.

3. FLORIDA

Flight Time From UK: 9hr 40min

Average Temperature in November: 26°C

Florida is not called the Sunshine State for nothing and with Disneyworld in Orlando too, Florida should be close to the top of your list of winter sun destinations – particularly if you are travelling with children. Spend some time exploring the theme parks before heading out to the beach in Miami. It’s the best of both worlds.

4. MAINLAND SPAIN

Flight Time From UK: 2hr 50min

Average Temperature in November: 20°C

Although not roasting in Winter, temperatures in Marbella in November still get up over 20oC on a consistent basis. As it’s less than 3 hours from the UK, Spain is a great option during the winter for shorter breaks or for those who can’t travel long-haul. Also, at Clock Out Check In we don’t believe in dieting for holidays especially in winter. You can enjoy all the carbs before Marbs that you want!

5.CanARY ISLANDS

Flight Time From UK: 4hr 30min

Average Temperature in November: 24°C

The Canary Islands have a mixed reputation in the UK. Some return year after year to this part of the world and it is one of the most popular destinations for British travellers. But others still cling to outdated images of ‘Lanze-grotty’ and dreadful holiday resorts. We love the Canary Islands and would recommend avoiding some of the bigger resorts for the best experience. Los Gigantes in Tenerife is a great place to get some winter sun with good weather guaranteed all year round.

6 TURKEY

Flight Time From UK: 4hr 15min

Average Temperature in November: 21°C

Turkey has become an increasingly popular destination for holidaymakers from the UK. With luxury hotels at a fraction of the price elsewhere in Europe and beyond, it is a great place to soak up some winter sun. Temperatures do not reach the highs of long-haul destinations but the weather is still good enough for some sunbathing in your swimming costumes.
